30 years have passed since Salcheto started its life as a wine producer, converting from a multicrop farm to a winemaking firm of high innovation and quality.
In old Tuscan dialect, “salco” means willow, a historically important tree in winemaking area as vines were bound using its branches (known as “vinco”). Salcheto is the name of the stream that begins near Montepulciano and runs through a valley with an abundance of willow trees. This brook marks the boundaries of Salcheto, an organic and biodynamic company, rooted in the Vino Nobile winemaking area, in the southeast of the province of Siena in Tuscany.
The willow, a tree that Salcheto - headed up by Michele Manelli since 1997 - continues to replant to create the biomass that help to independently power the winery, is now the company logo, supporting the firm’s commitment to environmental sustainability.
The estate covers 65 hectares, 50 of which are covered in vineyards, organic and divided into three lots (Montepulciano, Chiusi and Val d’Orcia), producing about 230,000 bottles every year.
An independently powered winery, founded on energy saving and environmental efficiency, a range of wine affording outstanding territoriality, which benefit from technical expertise and are produced using grapes and nothing else, a philosophy that can be touched in the pressurized winemaking room, which is ultramodern and simple to understand. Agriculture that safeguards the biodiversity of its ecosystem in an efficient and reasoned way and a product that involves people in its making, thanks also to the welcome of an cellar that is open every day, beginning with the grape harvest, offering visits that familiarize visitors with the cellar’s day-to-day work. Choices that show good sense, which the team led by Michele Manelli and Mario Turrini knew how to interpret in a feat of contemporary architecture of social and territorial positioning.
